Konkan Railway Corporation Limited

The Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. was set up to construct and operate a broad gauge line (760 km long) between Roha in Maharashtra and Mangalore in Karnataka. The railway line would considerably reduce the journey time between Mumbai and Mangalore, Mumbai and Cochin and Mumbai and Goa. The 446-km long Ratnagiri Sanwantwadi section of this railway line was opened to traffic in December 1996 while the work on the remaining part is still in progress.

Calcutta Metro Railway

It is the first venture of its kind in India envisaging construction of a 16.45 km long underground railway from Dum Dum Junction to Tollygunge in Calcutta to cater to the needs of the metropolis. Work on the project commenced in 1973. On October 24,1984, a 0.40 km. Section between Esplanade and Bowanipur was opened to passenger traffic. This section was further extended up to Tollygunge in April 1986, increasing its total length to 7.64 km. Commencing from August 13, 1994, the services were progressively extended. In 1994-95, it covered a total length of 14.65 km in two separate stretches in North and South Calcutta respectively.

The through-running between Dum Dum and Tollygunge was finally commissioned on September 27, 1995 and the last remaining station, Mahatma Gandhi Road, was opened to traffic on February 11,1996. There are more than 2.5 lakh commutes availing the metro service on working days. The total earnings of the Metro Railway, Calcutta was Rs. 4.82 crore and Rs. 1.52 crore during 1994-95 and 1995-96 respectively.

Container Corporation of India Limited

A promising development in the Eighth Plan was the performance of the Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), which reached a level of 400,000 TEUs in 1996-97, registering a compound annual growth rate of 33 per cent. The domestic container traffic is also growing well, registering an annual growth rate of 90 per cent. (Source: Ninth Five Year Plan).

However, CONCOR's share in total output is just over 2% and there is, therefore, enormous scope for growth in this area.

The Indian Railways and other organisations working under its umbrella have expertise in the field of rail services and manufacture of rail equipment. The Indian Railways and its organisations particularly RITES and IRCON have been providing expert services to various countries particularly in Africa.

IRCON International Limited

It was set up in 1976 and has diversified into areas other than railways construction such as roads, bridges, industrial complexes etc.

Centre for Railway Information System

It was set up in 1987 to provide necessary support in processing and developing information systems. Till 1995-96 it had developed seven systems.
